The view from atop Travel Hack Mountain!

One more edition of our unusual travel hacks!

For other travel hack columns, go to Part Ten and Part Eleven and Part Twelve and Part Thirteen and Part Fourteen and Part Fifteen and Part Sixteen and Part Seventeen and Part Eighteen and Part Nineteen and Part Twenty and Part Twenty-One and Part Twenty-Two and Part Twenty-Three.

Here are the latest hacks:

Cold hands? You should be wearing mittens, not gloves. And if you say, “I prefer the manual dexterity that comes with gloves,” keep in mind that the colder your hands, the less dextrous they are anyway.

Also, remember when your grandmother used to say, “Wear a hat! You lose ninety percent of your body heat through your head!” She was wrong. Maybe you should still wear a hat, but you lose heat in direct proportion to your percentage of exposed skin.

AARP — formerly known as the Association of American Retired Persons in the U.S. — offers some pretty great deals and discounts to members. But even though the organization focuses on issues for people aged 50 and older, you only have to be 18 or older to become a member!

Here’s a sneaky scam that more and more companies are using: for recurring subscriptions, they’re charging you every 28 days, not monthly. Then, at the end of a year, you’ll have been charged thirteen times, not twelve.

Be on the lookout! SafetyWing travel insurance does this, and increasingly, so do many storage unit facilities.

Another scam to be on the lookout for: Uber is in the process of rolling out a “preferred currency” setting. The default option is your home-currency. The problem is, if you’re in a country that uses a different currency, you’ll be charged a hefty “conversion” fee.

To avoid this, go to wallet > preferred currency > no preferred currency.
