We have both man made and natural rock pools in Hawaii. The most famous is the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium - currently under renovation. The natural pools are frequently called “Baby Beach” and are usually part of a larger beach. My local “Baby Beach” is at the western end of Baldwin Beach on Maui.

The idea of a shark joining me in an enclosed space is scary! Did you go to the rock-cut pools in Sliema when you were on Malta? There's a whole series of them along part of the seafront, big and small. And it's not quite the same as looking out over the Pacific, but I have great memories of swimming in a Roman rock pool (fishpond) on Crete when I was on excavation.

Can sharks or stinging things get tossed in the rock pool, too? Can you see down in the water to verify this before going in? Asks a fraidy cat.

These look amazing! I’ve been two a couple in Tenerife which were perfect after a day hike. Also a lot of great surfing there.

Aren't they wonderful? I have spent many an early morning swimming in Sydney's rock pools. They have them here in the UK too but it's rarely warm enough to use them. 😄 Great article!

So true!

Writing this from Sydney where we are visiting family for a few weeks. We were at Bilgola beach just south of Whale beach just a couple of days ago which has a great example, but it’s the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club where Sabrina learned to swim and Bondi Icebergs pool that hold the most memories for us, Michael.

I was delighted until you mentioned the occasional shark, but I'll forget I read that part. I'm on the Sea of Cortez in a not populated area in Sonora MX and it's tempting to go in but every time I do I get nipped, ripped see a zillion small sharks coming out of a net and pine for the Caribbean, but don't want to live over there. This is perfect! Enjoyed the read. Also as a PS every time I read and try to like your articles it asks me to subscribe (which I already have) and then I sub again and click the heart then it asks me to sub again. Not sure what that's about but it happens on a few others so I feel like you may have more subs than is noted? Anyway, I would spend hours in a rock pool!!!!

You’ve convinced me. Australia is now on my shortlist. And now I think I might be obsessed with rock pools.

These look fascinating. I look forward to finding them next year.

The fact that they offer this kind of protection is a bonus!

Those look amazing! Incredible photos too, as always.

I've never seen these types of structures before, but they've just been added to my travel bucket list.

I saw them on Tenerife, too. They’re so necessary there because of the waves. If only I had organized my photos better I could show you…but it’s midnight here and I’m tired. Thanks for this post! I will be enjoying these pools if/when I go to Australia!
