Here in Keszthely, Hungary, on the shores of Lake Balaton, the lake has become my photographic muse. It’s offered me an endless assortment of birds, boats, and ever-changing sunrises!
Here are some of my favorite photos:
All along the lake are “strands,” which are a combination of beaches and parks. During the summer you have to pay a fee to enter. But starting September 1, they are all free — and pretty empty.
I don’t normally take pics of things that scream “INSTAGRAM ME!” but how could I say no with this sunrise?
That’s the Hableany, a cute boat that takes visitors on short excursions around the lake.
Believe it or not, this Ferris wheel is put up in May and then taken down in October. Where it goes for the winter, I can’t say.
Lake Balaton is hugely popular with bike riders. A network of trails runs around the entire lake and is filled with cyclists on weekends.
That’s my husband hanging out onboard the Hableany as we cruise around Lake Balaton.
These colorful little boats are buttoned up for the season, but that building in the background is a lovely bathhouse. On warm days, you’ll find the locals swimming in the lake, then sunning themselves on the docks.
Every morning, the swans of Lake Balaton feed along the shoreline. When they ate their fill, they spent the rest of the time grooming themselves.
I fell in love with this little green boat. I took pictures of it every morning, and every time something was different — from the light, to the stillness of the water, to swans and ducks swimming past.
You have to get up pretty early to get down to the dock before the lamps turn off each morning. But that wasn’t a problem for me.
I don’t know was going on with the seagulls this particular morning. But they were suddenly everywhere around the boathouse.
The ducks were normally very skittish of people. Perhaps they either got used to seeing me or this particular morning the water was just too damned cold for them.
This channel cuts into the shore along one part of the lake and is filled with boats the locals moor here. They became another favorite thing of mine to photograph.
