Fun read! I always love to hear what tourists think of our weird language😄 However I must make one correction - we don’t have shrimp here, only prawns 😝

Those AI images will haunt my nightmares!!

Which I have since learned and shall correct!

As a Brit living in New Zealand for the past 17 years, I fully concur. In between the lazy shortened words (why expend more energy than you need on a hot day?), and the everyday use of Māori words (which I love), I find myself speaking a whole new language down here 😃 It's just hard to remember to revert back to English 1.0 when I go back to my roots!

Yeah, the first time I returned to the US I was pretty obnoxious with all of the Aussie slang!

You know that half of this is British slang the dirty convicts stole on their way south? ;)

There's defo some overlap. But 50% of what I've got here? I don't think so...

I write about Straya a bit, and have come across lots of articles that hash and rehash Australian lingo, but this is the most dinkum site I’ve come across that actually has some smarts behind it : https://slll.cass.anu.edu.au/centres/andc/meanings-origins/all

Forgot to say you're right about that site!

Having spent the month of September with our friends in Australia (my third trip there), this was a fun read. I understand most Aussie slang, but there are the occasional words that throw me. Australia will always be in my heart and the boomerang that is now tattooed on my arm is proof that I'll always return there!

So glad you love it as much as I do!

Dear Michael:

I certainly like what Bing's AI thinks it knows what you like by way of the Australian men it provided for you. Whenever my students do something of note, I sometimes use the following, "As they say in Australia, 'Good on ya'". I learned that from a bonafide Australian I worked with a few years ago. Take care and enjoy the holidays in sunny and warm Sydney.

Thank you, William. I reckon that's a great saying to know. Hope it isn't too chilly wherever you are at!

Love hearing that!

The AI images are hysterical 🤣

They totally killed me!

OMG this is simultaneously hilarious and appalling. I know the slang of course, and yeah a 'Murican trying to use it would be cringey like nails on a chalk board. The Bing AI images are truly appalling on so many levels. Great article Michael.
