Thank you. Haha, that's a really good question. It's mostly marketing, I guess, but there are also sensibility issues. The target audience is SUPPOSED to be teens, but for the last two decades, most readers of YA have been older teens and adults. There used to be limits on the amount of sex and other topics, but since the actual audience has shifted, those limits have shifted too.
Basically, it just means "a teen character" and probably "an issue or story that teens might care about." And practically speaking, the books are more plot-driven and maybe more "commercial."
I'm really sorry to hear GEOGRAPHY CLUB's film adaptation went so badly, though I'm still not sure Hollywood's mature enough to handle Gay teens—or Gay adults...or any group that isn't two hot women making out a lot! That goes double for ABC, Disney, and any combination thereof, given Disney STILL thinks putting Josh Gad in a red cravat, or having two women kiss in the background is "courageous"! 🤦♂️
LOL actually I was referring to the movie based on PROJECT PAY DAY. But yeah, the movie based on GEOGRAPHY CLUB (which came out in 2014) was...also not my fav. But it sold a hell of a lot of books!
Congratulations on your new novel! Way to go !
Thank you! I appreciate that.
I’ll be buying a couple copies for the library :)
Congrats, Brent!!
(I’ll also be reading it, obvs)
Sweet! And thank you very much!
Love the jacket article Brent! Question - what differentiates YA function from standard fiction?
